About the Author

Sue Holwell joined Cranfield University in 1998 and taught on the MSc in the Design of Information Systems and MBA at the Royal Military College of Science. In April 2002 she joined the Systems Department at the Open University. She is currently Senior Lecturer in Information Systems, Centre for Complexity and Change, Technology Faculty, Open University.

Dr Martin Reynolds joined OU in 2000. He previously worked with Gerald Midgley at Hull University co-authoring Operational Research and Environmental Management with support from the Operational Research Society. His interest in critical systems came through PhD work on participatory natural resource-use appraisal in Botswana, based at the Institute for Development Policy and Management (IDPM).

Interesting thriller

Even though WWII is going on and Britain is being bombed nightly, London's criminal life doesn't let up. During the black-out, the city is plagued by a murderer dubbed the "Blackout Ripper" and the police are doing everything they can to find him and stop him. However, every lead on the case opens more doors and inquiries only lead to more questions. Henry Drake is a journalist who can smell the accolades he will receive by being the one to print the identity of the Blackout Ripper. Charlie Murphy has lived in his brother's shadow his entire life and knows that finding the murderer would lead to him being the brother on top. Meanwhile, Charlie's brother Frank just wants to find the man menacing his city before he kills again. Though they aren't working together, it will take these three men to find out who the madman is and stop him from committing more crimes.

Though I, and everyone else for that matter, am aware of Jack the Ripper, I had never heard of the Blackout Ripper. Through research (and by research I mean googling it) I learned a bit more about this killer and his spree. The real life killer was the basis for this novel, but this isn't a novel about the actual events. I will admit that it took me a while to get into the novel. The article snippets at the beginning confused me and it took a while to get a handle on the characters, but once I got past that I found that I couldn't put the book down. There were so many twists and turns that I was frantically clicking the "next page" button on my Kindle to find out what happened next. Dawson has shown himself to be a true master of suspense, leaving the reader hanging, wanting to find out what happens with one scene while following another character who, seemingly, has nothing to do with the other scene. There were some graphic parts so if you aren't into that, beware, but if you enjoy a good historical crime novel I would definitely recommend this one.

So good I've read it twice - London, Soho, Crime, Vice

I was recommended to read this by a friend, and was unaware of the author Mark Dawson, so I went into it not knowing what to expect.

The book is compelling,and I happily created time in my day to read it. The level of detail, the unexpected twists & turns keep you gripped from start to finish. The 1940's lingo brings a reality to the setting and the grimy side of Soho was brought alive.

I have read the book a second time, testament to how engaged I became with it.

I will be looking for, and reading more, from this author

Atmospheric crime thriller set in London during The Blitz

Set just before and during The London Blitz, when the German Luftwaffe tried to bomb Britain out of World War II, The Black Mile by Mark Dawson is a crime thriller told from three perspectives

Brothers Frank and Charlie Murphy are police officers, and Henry Drake is a newspaper reporter with more than a few secrets, but all three are looking for The Blackout Ripper, a serial killer murdering prostitutes in the seedy West End of London.

I'm a fan of the British TV series Foyle's War, which also involves the premise of the police "carrying on" and catching criminals against the backdrop of a world war. Like that excellent series, The Black Mile has plenty of atmospheric touches to keep the reader immersed as well as more than a few plotlines and red herrings along the way.

In what I think is a bold move, the author left several threads unresolved. I'm not sure if a sequel is planned, but I found the lack of closure to be realistic considering the circumstances.

.....a compelling, scholarly and very accessible book depicting Mozart's relationship with the culturally rich city and its citizens.

Dr. Freeman has written a seamless, historical account of Mozart, Prague and their intersection. Freeman immerses the reader in eighteenth century Bohemia through the use of primary source material, genealogies, etchings, maps and photos.

From the first line of the introduction, the reader has a sense of personal presence in the streets of Prague, "The weather of Vienna on the afternoon of 6 of December 1791, unseasonably mild but foggy, should have provided the perfect contemplative atmosphere for the mourners who attended the ceremony in St. Stephen's Cathedral that preceded the burial of Wofgang Amadeus Mozart."

Section One is devoted to describing the history of 18th century Bohemia and the importance of music in the lives of the Bohemian people. Section Two focuses on the specific experiences of Mozart in Prague between 1787 and 1791, as well as the reaction to his death by its citizens. Section Three addresses the musical works written specifically for Prague, including Don Giovanni and The Prague Symphony. The Appendices contain surveys of the musical numbers in the Prague version of Don Giovanni and La clemenza di Tito, sites in Prague that Mozart visited that are still there today, and a history of the blood lines of early Czech rulers (pre 1471) which run through all the current European monarchs.

Good for music history buffs

A remarkable achievement. In-depth research via the press, private diaries and letters, plus a wide review of the life of Mozart as written up through the 1800s, and now reviewed through an academic lens for accuracy and plausibility. All very good. The drawback in this book is its plodding academic style and the mediocre editing. There are messy paragraphs in which logic goes astray, as well as quite a few grammatical errors. There is a glaring error on page 135 (repeated on page 177) when the author gets a musical citation wrong: it's the quintet in Act I of "The Magic Flute" that starts with humming, not the quintet in Act II. There may be other missteps.

If you can slog through the first two chapters, you'll be rewarded when Mozart appears.

I wish the map of Prague were better, with a scale and the river named and its flow indicated. A larger map of the non-defined term "Bohemian lands" would be helpful also. Similarly, a biographical list of major characters who appear throughout this book!

I don't usually write reviews, however I had to write something about this new book from Chazz Palminteri. I am a huge fan of the movie a Bronx Tale - as I am sure millions of other people are. This book is the original play in which the move was created from. Highly recommended for fans of a Bronx Tale (the movie), chazz palminteri and movie fans alike.

I bought Cracking the TOEFL IBT with Audio CD, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep)( Princeton Review) and Kaplan TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM 2008-2009 (Kaplan Toefl Ibt) .i read both of them for one month and passed the ibt by 97. This is what I think about these two books on all four part of ibt:
Princeton Review
Reading 3 out of 5: good strategies but the readings are simpler than the real exam
Writing 5 out of 5: great strategies and samples with good drills
Speaking 4 out of 5: good strategies and drills but difficult to use on exam

About the Author

Ilya Mikhelson had more than 30 years of experience in design, research, and teaching design of bridges, tunnels, subway stations, and buildings. He wrote numerous publications, including Precast Concrete for Underground Construction, Tunnels, and Subways and Building Structures.

Tyler G. Hicks, PE, is a consulting engineer and a successful engineering book author. He has worked in plant design and operation in a variety of industries, taught at several engineering schools, and lectured both in the United States and abroad. Mr. Hicks holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York. He is the author of more than 20 books in engineering and related fields, including Civil Engineering Formulas, Handbook of Mechanical Engineering Calculations, and Handbook of Energy Engineering Calculations.

Good Reference

So I read this book, and I think there is good coverage of topics overall. Go back and look at the good reviews that people have left about the first edition of this book, a couple people have made previous reviews in regards to using this book for engineering practice and as a study aid for the P.E. exam. The civil and structural engineering principles are perfectly in line, and the book is very thin to carry around; so you'll hardly notice it is in your briefcase.

I noticed that this book is not up to date, which is why I have a four-star review here. I will explain why the book is not up to date.

For instance, on page 132 of this book is a page on base plates for columns. The equation this book has for allowable bearing pressure is 0.35*f'c*square root(A2/A1). Now in the ACI 318-11 and AISC 360-05 codes, the equation is 0.85*f'c*square root(A2/A1). So the mathematical coefficients are different due to updated codes, but the equations and engineering principles are the same.

In Chapter 2 or 3 of this book, there are some formulas for properties of geometric sections. The author used Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, 4th edition. There is an 8th edition of Roark's formulas in print right now.

I bought this book mainly for the frame analysis. I have referred to it on several occasions since buying it. I would recommend it.

Check the variables!

Inconsistent notation. For example, on the same page, it shows bending stress = M/S and shear stress = SV/Ib, except the two Ss aren't the same value. Again, on the same page, it shows S = I/c and SV/Ib = 3V/2A for rectangles. Great. But knowing that the shear modulus (S)=bh^2/6 and I=bh^3, SV/Ib 3V/2A. Why couldn't they use shear stress = QV/Ib like everyone else? Q being the static moment, not the shear modulus. In fairness, they do an example on the next page making it clear they aren't the same thing, but why use the same variable on the same page two rows apart from each other when they don't represent the same value!? It's supposed to be a quick reference guide. If you quickly looked at that page and ran with it, you'd get the wrong answer.

An excellent intro for readers with some math background

This book is a welcome introduction for readers who are comfortable with basic differential equations and vector calculus. As an applied mathematician interested in learning the fundamentals of MRI, I had grown quite frustrated with the simplified literature on one hand ("MRI for technologists", "MRI for medical people", "MRI for dummies"...) and the professional literature on the other, which is directed at people already immersed in the study of MR technology. In contrast, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject for applied mathematicians (though this may not have been the intended audience), as it makes no assumptions regarding reader's science background and thus explains thoroughly all relevant E+M, physics and signal processing. But most importantly, it does so without cutting mathematical corners. This results in a far more lucid and logical exposition than books which try to protect the reader for his/her own good.

Valuable Resource

This text is invaluable for anyone interested in MRI. It is a very good intro to the field, and if you understand this book you have a solid foundation for exploring more modern MRI texts. Up until a few years ago, just about every journal paper in MRI cited this book. When I started grad school for electrical engineering, I went down the path of medical imaging; I would not have gotten very far without this book.

Our labs most used resource in MRI- period. This book is used to answer any questions we encounter about the mechanics of MRI, plus is used in both MRI courses. The first half of the book focuses on basic principles. The second half develops advanced concepts for the advanced technician. Clearly written, durable, and nice large font.
