Useful book once you understand the material.

This is a very useful book. I am a beginner, so my review might not mean much. I would suggest getting guitar lessons because the instructor can help you understand the material in the book. If I didn't have a teacher I would be completely lost trying to interpret this book on my own. Just a heads up this book does not have guitar tab, so unless you know how to read music, you might want to consider getting personal lessons along with this book.

The method works -- I learned to sight read with this book!

My guitar teacher uses "The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method - Volume 1: Guitar Technique" as the text for his beginning guitar students. While my teacher doesn't always agree with Mr. Parkening on nuances of technique (he told me, "Ignore these pages on hand positioning; do it the way I showed you.") the book is very useful for teaching/learning sight reading. As a person of (ahem) a certain age, I honestly doubted that I could learn to sight read. However, after only a few weeks of working with my teacher using Mr. Parkening's incremental method, I can now easily read and find on the fretboard a number of notes -- each week we add three to six more. I believe that as we keep chipping away at it I'll achieve my dream of being able to sight read and play increasingly difficult classical pieces on the guitar.

I find the duets very inspiring -- when I play my easy part along with my teacher (he gets the harder part) it gives me some perspective on where I'm headed and a delicious taste of what's possible. Having these duets is a lovely inducement to work hard enough to play the next one, and the next -- a carrot dangling before me to tempt me through the occasional sticky (repetitive, difficult) practice session.

One important caveat: I think this book would be difficult to use without a teacher. There is so much material that I'm getting from my teacher directly -- seating position, how to hold the guitar, important nuances of hand and finger positioning which he gently corrects throughout the lesson, learning how to mark up and learn pieces, how to read ahead and place my fingers ahead for the next note(s), etc. He helps me shape my nails properly, which is vitally important for a good tone! Personally, I would not rely on this book or any other book in the absence of a good and patient teacher. When we begin guitar (or any other instrument), that is the time when we establish our foundation. It's very difficult to unlearn bad habits once they're formed.

UPDATE: I found the version with the CD and it is very helpful. Four years after beginning my guitar studies with this book, my sight-reading and playing have grown by leaps and bounds. I can't begin to express how thrilled I was when I was able to read and play the final work in this book, a beginner-intermediate arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by J.S. Bach. Thank you, Mr. Parkening for a VERY helpful method book -- and thanks to my teacher for skillfully guiding me through the early stages of classical guitar studies using Mr. Parkening's method.

Rekindled interest in learning guitar

I got the volume at the suggestion of a teacher/guitar maker after I told him I had hit a plateau as a beginning bluegrass player. The change from that to classical guitar seemed a rather big swing, but I did find that it rekindled my interest. Though I'm still at the very beginning stages of lessons, I liked the non-threatening approach, pictures/diagrams and text. I'll get a better feel for the volume's effectiveness as I progress. One conflicting piece of advice I did get was to practice a minimum of 1-3 hours per day as opposed to 15 minutes that I was advised to do from online teachers and other players. Would be interested in other opinions on this topic.

I loved this book so much so I highlighted most of it in Kindle. I will refer to it again & again. I like his spin on oscillating true Lilith ( H13 on astro.com) and his explanations on why he finds it more true to the changing dynamic nature of lilith than the average (mean) black moon Lilith. A well-thought study of an often misunderstood archetype

One of the most comprehensive summaries of Lilith as myth and archetype that I have ever read. My astrological savvy is sophomoric at best so the last half of the book discussing Lilith as an astrological influence was over my head. However, I found the first part of the book to be of such great value in my studies that it stands alone as a sufficiently valuable read.

Anyone raising a daughter should read Lilith and find out where she is in your daughter's chart because when they say that an repressed Lilith will make sure she is heard they aren't kidding. My Lilith was in my fifth house right between Pluto and Uranus and it was in aspect to my sun which was in my seventh house which means that I wasn't comfortable with my own power so that I only expressed it thru relationships. Well I need not tell those who know astrology how that played out.

a good insight into the indian struggles

This book gives the reader a good overview of the history of the struggle of the native Americans for survival and adaptation in the face of the relentless pressure put on their peoples by the onslaught of immigration from Europe. The book is well balanced and helped me to comprehend what were the challenges faced by the native populations here in America and how they adapted to these challenges, in order to survive. Its a good place to start for anyone interested in this topic.

The work of one of America's more important filmmakers is ill-served by this reverential biography. Aftab arranges the narrative around Lee's films, from breakout hit She's Gotta Have It (1986), through such cinematic touchstones as Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), ending with the flop She Hate Me (2004). The resulting string-of-boxcars structure is a little disjointed, but it keeps the focus on Lee's often controversial and politically engaged films and delivers a flow of moviemaking anecdotes that give a sense of the director's domineering, manipulative, charismatic personality. Unfortunately, this very authorized biography staggers under the weight of the many lengthy tributes to Lee's genius and his statesmanship as the standard-bearer of African-American cinema. Complaints are sometimes aired about the director and his movies (he does cop to allowing "unreconstructed male chauvinism" to mar his films), but criticisms are quickly shouted down by rebuttals from Lee and a chorus of admiring actors and colleagues. Aftab's poorly organized text often feels like a collection of barely edited interview transcripts, with Lee and his friends' rambling on for paragraphs on end. Over the course of his career, film director Spike Lee has alienated many groups: Italian Americans, Asian Americans, Jews, lesbians--and, most recently, paying moviegoers. Because of this book's packaging (first-person subtitle, head-on author photo, "as told to" writing credit), fans and foes alike may think they're getting a candid, jointly authored memoir written in Lee's voice. But Spike Lee is actually an oral history in which the director's voice is but one of many. Aftab interviewed scores of family, friends, and filmmaking collaborators, then created a reportorial narrative, organized by film. (The method will be familiar to anyone who's read the companion books to Lee's earlier films.) But if readers are disappointed at not getting more from Lee himself, there's consolation in that what his colleagues and critics say can be more revealing. And although the book has Lee's imprimatur, Aftab is not afraid to take issue with Lee. As might be expected with such a controversial subject, too much time is spent getting sides of arguments, and the writing is somewhat stiff, but this is still an invigorating look back at the work of one of our least predictable, most important filmmakers. Don't believe the hype!

I love Spike Lee movies --- "Do the right thing," "The 25th Hour," and "Clockers, but this book by Kaleem Aftab is shallow and meanders to the point of infuriating. At best it's a surface portrait of a complex man and his films. The book is an easy read, but never delves into the complicated world that Lee has created on and off screen.

From his childhood and all throughout his film career, Spike Lee, born Shelton Jackson Lee, has been outspoken and opinionated. These solid traits, along with the sense of responsibility one acquires by being the oldest of five siblings, combined with education, talent, hard work, and great timing to produce one of the most recognized African-American film directors and producers to date. In SPIKE LEE: THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT, author Kaleem Aftab pens Spike's biography with such dedication and attention to details that readers will know everything one can know being on the outside looking into the life of Spike Lee: his upbringing, his college days, his first movies, his motivations, his financial trials, his political standpoints, his outlook on life, his recent films, and his goals. Although all is not rosy, Aftab still pulls back the cover and exposes details of Spike's life, before, after, and during the making of his films.

Starting with his childhood and then arranged by film, Aftab proves to have done excellent research as he provides readers with a plethora of facts about everyone Spike ever spoke to and/or dealt with and about how he started and got to where he is now. Offering insight into the motivations behind Spike's movies and good behind-the-scenes information, Aftab presents a novel that delves not just into Spike's life, but also illuminates certain well-known actors who Spike chose to work with: Bill Nunn, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, John Turturro, Danny Aiello, and Laurence Fishburne (to name a few). Readers really get a strong grasp of who Spike Lee is as Aftab talks about some of the filmmaker's classic New York outlooks and his perspectives on African-Americans, not just in film but also in life.

Extremely informational, SPIKE LEE, by Aftab, starts out slow and mundane. Aftab's writing style is not very intriguing or captivating for readers, which is a shame for it to be the biography of such an interesting figure. Also jumpy, it is difficult to keep up with what is going on. A section will begin discussing one event and will go off on a tangent about a list of people, who they are, and how they relate to Spike or the movie, and then jump back to the previous event. Transitional aids would help to make section themes flow better. A stronger narrative voice would also make information flow better. Throughout the biography, there are a plethora of quotes. Sometimes, a quote is so long and involved that it is easy for readers to forget that it is a quote, and jumping back to the narrator's voice once again throws off the flow of the text. As readers press on and become adjusted to Aftab's writing style, his composition creates a well-researched look into the life of one of America's prominent African-American directors/producers: Spike Lee.

He Wuz Robbed!!!

I disagree with the reviews left so far. I found this book to be very interesting and informative. I was expecting a first person retelling of Spike's life from his point of view. What I received was an honest account of Lee's movie making history, told from the perspective of the people who were there. That to me is what makes this book special.

Most would agree that Spike Lee played an instrumental role in changing the movie industry. He was one of the first AA directors to make films "his way", he also opened doors for a multitude of African American actors, directors, DPs, sound people etc. This book gives the low down on how he accomplished all of that. What I liked even more about this work is the fact that it doesn't glorify Lee. It seems to be a vehicle for Lee to tell us how he goes about his craft but also allows the people closest to him to express their views on what he has done well and not so well over the course of his career.

While I admit to being a fan of this director's prolific work and contributions, I am not such a fan as to believe he doesn't have some personality issues that rub folks the wrong way. Beyond that, he has been a trailblazer and a champion for minorities in an industry that had long ago written them off. I also think that if he wanted to, Mr. Lee is very capable of making outstanding commercial movies, that's just not his thing. Many of us are unaware that he has been a driving force behind some of Black Americas best commercial movies, The Best Man and Love and Basketball for example.

For better or worse (depending on the reader)this book reads less like a biography and more like the transcript of a documentary. I recommend it to serious movie buffs, and people with an entrepreneurial spirit.

The third ebook in a joint collaboration between T.F. Wright and Volkenfox.

After injuring her foot in a race, Becky the rabbit goes becomes very depressed because she came in second place. Where she gains weight, finds new nerdy friends that accept her new self; then competes her transition into an obese nerd.

T.F. Wright is very efficient with his writing. He knows what needs to happen and doesn't meander around and doesn't put in pointless fluff. If there is a slight flaw in the ebook while Becky is a decent character, the supporting ones are a little on the flat side.
The transition from an athletic track star to fat nerd is pretty well done. The illustrations Volkenfox are excellent and complement the story being told rather than overshadowing it.

If you like weight gain and furries, you will definitely enjoy this story!

Great illustrations! Disappointing narrative...

I purchased this story a few months back as the subject matter peeked my interest. Unfortunately, I found the overall product to be rather disappointing. Rather than going into a lengthy explanation, I'm choosing instead to go with a simple pro and con breakdown.

Pros:

- Excellent descriptions
- Great use of illustrations
- Well intentioned message

Cons:

- Serious pacing issues, especially early on
- Poor development of supporting characters
- Over reliance on stereotypes
- Possibly offensive representation of gamers
- Unlikeable main protagonist
- Message gets botched due to major imbalances in narrative and character actions

So yes, the only parts of this story I really enjoyed were the descriptions and illustrations, but I found the characters to be very poorly written, either being jerks or stereotypes. Becky is easily the worst offender. Her initial reaction to the injury makes her come off as shallow and petty, and the events and choices she makes over the course of the story make her appear ignorant at best and stupid at worst. She learns a good lesson by the end, but her health and the state of her life went way down hill.
To sum up my thoughts, good intentions became completely botched due to cartoonish extremes and inconsistent development of narrative and characters. Nice drawings though.
