About the Author
Benjamin Keen (PhD, Yale University) was professor Emeritus from Northern Illinois University. He was a leading scholar in the field of Latin American history, particularly the colonial period in Mexico. Although retired from active teaching for some years, Keen continued to research, write, and lecture until his death in late 2002.

Keith Haynes (PhD 1981 Northern Illinois University) is Professor of History at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where he has taught Latin American and U.S. diplomatic history for more than 20 years.

Decent Historical Summary

This book, although good in its use of terms and in its summary of Latin American History, for me personally does not do a terrific job of explaining everything that happened. This book is also difficult to read in some places, and often spends too much time dealing with a topic that in my opinion is relatively insiginficant to the history of Latin America. I used this book as a textbook for my I.B. History of the Americas course, and I do not feel like it is a good source for the Higher Level exam. If you just want a general summary of Latin American History, this is the book for you. However, for those like me who need a serious text for either a class or a test, I would find a source with more thorough notes.

Concise and readable, this text offers an excellent account of Latin American History. This sixth edition, new for 2000, is even better than its predecessors, offering an update on the happenings in each of the country's covered. This book is an excellent choice for anyone who is either just starting out in the field of Latin American studies or just looking to add to their collection.

Not so sure about this. I'm in the process of comparing scripture. I think it has a too modernist viewpoint that tries to put words or ideas forward that were not the intent of the original Scripture.

No index - But otherwise worth the time and money!

Justice has long been a theme of the Christian Church, but with few exceptions we hear little about it from those who speak most loudly for the church. Tim Stafford and his team of 56 writers plus additional staff have put together a useful tool for perceiving and understanding the place justice has in God’s economy.

There is much to excite the Christian leader or layperson as he picks up this volume for the first time. I was pleased that the editor chose to use the NIV (2011) to use as a foundation for the printed version of the Justice Bible. Though some ma have preferred an earlier NIV version, by choosing the NIV this Study Bible does have a well-respected foundation upon which to build.

However, having noted the translation, the first thing I noticed (and confirmed by reading the introduction) was the international flavor of the book. Book notes are written by scholars and leaders from all over the world. There are very few pages without notes - demonstrating that, to these authors, God’s justice is pervasive throughout time and the scriptures. I was also glad to see each book concludes with “Questions for Reflection” - these are brief but to the point.

That does not mean that this Study Bible is perfect (but what is?). First, the notes do not stand out - the font is small and and the notes brief compared to the text they discuss. There are no formal cross references which would allow the reader to see how individual themes continue throughout the scriptures. There are some references within the notes, but these are scattered throughout the text and follow no strict pattern.

Though the notes do have an international authorship, the notes for each book are still the work of a single author from a single country. I don’t know if having a team of authors from two or more countries work on each Bible book would have made a difference, but it would have better expressed the “international” flavor of the book

Also, with so many notes, spread out through the whole text of scripture, an index is required - sadly, there is none. This makes finding notes and Bible texts which address a particular theme difficult (if not impossible) to find. With no index, this Bible could be helped by making a searchable digital version of the book. As in the past, I would like to see WordSearch or LOGOS add this to their digital libraries for easier use by the reader. With no index, it also may mean that this Bible is more suitable for reading than for studying. As I have noted in the past, accessibility is as important, if not more important, than content. This Bible falls short on accessibility.

I would recommend this Bible be made available to all pastors - we each work in justice ministries in one way or another. The same could be true of missionaries and those called to work among the world’s hurting and abused. Though this Bible does not need to be in every teacher’s home, it would find a place in the church library where teachers and others would have access to its contents for personal use.

A Fairy Tale with a Twist

"The Princess kissed the frog. He turned into a prince.And they lived happily ever after..." Well not really. The Princess nags; the Frog Prince has bad amphibian habits that drive her crazy and neither are living very happily. So the Frog Prince decides to go out and find a witch to turn him back into a frog. Along the way, he meets familiar characters from other stories and finds out that maybe life wasn't so bad after all, with the princess. In fact, upon returning home, the Frog Prince kisses the Princess and... This is a silly, irreverent story, told in hip language, with a wonderful twist at the end that will delight and amuse children of all ages. Steve Johnson's illustrations are marvelous and add just the right touch to compliment the story. Great fun for the entire family, The Frog Prince Continues is a story not to be missed.

One of the most original books I've ever read!

It's 9PM. The kids are all bathed, jammied up, tucked in, and ready for their bedtime story. I've had a hard day and my powers of creative book selection are nonexistent. Do I go with critter books or Seuss? Neither - at least not since I found "The Frog Prince Continued" by Steve Johnson and Jon Scieszka. In what has to be one of the most original and entertaining books of any kind, the authors have managed to combine wacky graphics with wonderfully off-center fairy tale fragments to create a story that begs to read over and over. Ever since she kissed his "slimy frog lips", the Prince and Princess have been whining and nagging about married life and the poor Prince can see only one way out of the turmoil - to find a witch that can turn him back into a frog. His hilarious journey through all of fairy-tale witchdom in search of his amphibious ends simply begs to be supplied with your own creative voices. When he meets his match in the definitely blonde and ditzy godmother from Cinderella, his situation goes rapidly downhill. Does he live to hop another day? Will the princess take him back? The perfect happy ending will satisfy both you and your kids and will keep you reaching for this book time after time. If I had one wish, it would be for Steve and Jon to fracture another fairy tale in a so elegant and entertaining fashion

A fairy tale for all ages

With beautiful illustrations and a witty story, this book takes the phrase "happily ever after" and turns it into a fairy tale of its own. The frog prince, tired of his nagging wife, heads back into the forest to rediscover happiness. His encounters with witches from various legends bring him to the realization that he was better off at home.
This book makes a great gift for your significant other after you've had a fight.
