Indispensable

This volume is the first of two that will replace the prior Anchor Bible volume, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, by R.B.Y. Scott, now more than forty years old. Much has been found, read, and discussed since then, making the new volume necessary and welcome.

The greatest strength of the book is Fox's ability to place Proverbs in the extraordinarily rich wisdom tradition of the ancient world, with particular attention to surviving texts from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Dead Sea. No less important is his attention to the differing transmissions of Proverbs through different scriptural traditions. Like the best of the Anchor volumes, the notes delve deeply into the details, constantly paying close attention to the Hebrew, with reference to the Talmud, to elucidate words, syntax, and symbolism.

Fox goes beyond merely recording parallels with other texts and commentaries of prior scholars: he weighs them, disputes them, and advances his own conclusions.

This new volume encourages me to think that the Anchor Bible will continue to grow and improve.

Classical thermo, with clarity & rigor, for physicists

This is a beautifully clear into to thermo, treated purely as macroscopic phenomenology.
Equilibrium thermodynamics (or thermostatics, as some call it) has manifold applications-in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, engineering, etc. The author is a physicist, and selects his material accordingly. However, he does devote the penultimate chapter , ch.11 ("Systems of Several Components") to some chemistry-type applications including chemical reactions in ideal gases.
Prior to Adkins, most thermo books I studied merged thermo with statistical mechanics. Entropy treated the purely macroscopic or "thermo way" appeared to me abstract & unintuitive, and cycles with heat engines seemed an awkward import from engineering.
The author entirely avoids leaning on statistical mechanics for the main thrust of his arguments, but makes a few side remarks about stat mech on occasion. By keeping the thermo pure, he teaches the reader its power and beauty. Everyone should learn thermo this way, and Adkins is a superb guide for the mature physicist. He achieves the unusual feat of providing careful, rigorous arguments while keeping the narrative smoothly flowing and readable. In other words, he honors the intellectual integrity so essential in this discipline, but never stifles the reader with pedantry or excessive detail.
The problems are sometimes challenging, but with sustained effort, I could "crack" most of those I tried. It was only in chap. 11 that I started to find the problems too difficult, and that may well reflect my own lack of prior exposure in this area.
(By the way, Adkins derives entropy with heat engines and Carnot cycles, but those who like a less torturous or "gizmo-ridden" route to entropy will be pleased that he also includes Caratheodory's abstract argument.)
Bravo to the author for creating this first-rate textbook. I cannot praise it too highly.

Clarity of Exposition

An exceptional introductory text emphasizing equilibrium thermodynamics as stand-alone topic.
Synopsis from the review of third edition in Journal of Chemical Education (Vol.62, No.4,1985) :
"...gem of a book, valuable resource,comprehensible and introductory..."
Familiarity with Calculus (including Partial Derivatives, of course), a bit of first-year Physics, and a
willingness to abstract thinking provide the student with the skills necessary to conquer this material.
Of particular merit is the Caratheodory treatment of Entropy (being additional---as it follows two chapters of traditional).
The sections pertaining to Kirchoff, Stefan-Boltzmann and Wein's Laws are most enjoyable to peruse, we read:
"...we shall avoid using electromagnetic theory here, instead, we shall think of the radiation as a gas of photons
and draw on some of the elementary results of the kinetic theory of gases."
The text touches upon the fundamentals in a manner which can hardly be improved upon, the prose enlightening.
The section discussing Legendre Transformation is brief, yet informative--the entire procedure described first in words,
equations then follow. ( A pedagogic tool worth remembering!) Another interesting qualitative exegesis revolves
around Clausius-Clapeyron Equation, again followed by which are the equations to accompany the prose.
All in all, a rather satisfying excursion into Classical Thermodynamics. This, at an elementary mathematical level.
Highly Recommended as enrichment for any undergraduate physics student.

I think I'd have developed into a better artist all around as it provides a process to ...

I just received my copy in the mail today, and I think this book is very well done. I was looking for something a little less "rudimentary" regarding Mr. Blando's process and style, but I can already tell this is going to be a go-to book for many budding and aspiring young cartographers. If this book had existed when I was discovering RPGs in junior high, I think I'd have developed into a better artist all around as it provides a process to explore one's own map-making and drawing skills.

The book seems to be written to directly address a person who is inspired by their imagination to create their own RPG world. How do you get the ideas out of your head and into a map that will help you play out the stories you want to tell? It's not necessarily written for more advanced and developed map-makers or cartographers, but speaks right to the heart of the need of those that have never made a map before and are bursting with ideas. The step-by-step methods he outlines are simple, and he takes it from an analog rather than a digital perspective. Anyone using a computer can certainly follow his outline, but he assumes his readers don't have a fancy computer program they've somehow mastered with all its bells and whistles. This book is more of pencil-and-paint approach, not a Photoshop recipe.

It also has a LOT of visual examples. The vast majority of the book gives examples but doesn't delve into specifics: "Step 1, Draw the henge. Step 2, Add detail. Step 3, Add finishing detail." It doesn't ever tell you how to draw the henge or add the details, it instead shows visual examples of how Mr. Blando does it. So there are lots and lots and LOTS of visual illustrations that are really inspirational. 30 years ago when I was in junior high, this book would have been too cost prohibitive to print. But today, it's a visual treat that young people get to enjoy.

My only regret (and perhaps some day Mr. Blando will write another book addressing it) is that it's a little too rudimentary for more advanced fantasy cartographers or fans of his work. I suspect, however, that may have had something to do with his editors and publishers.

Mr. Blando creates stunningly beautiful and imaginative cartography with a very high level of detail. And probably the best thing about this book is that it helps raise one's awareness of the thinking that goes into that detail. It parses his approach out into elements that a casual viewer can use to go back and appreciate his work (and all fantasy cartography) with new eyes. Helping budding cartographers become aware of all those possible aspects to creatively express one's own imagination through artistic mapping is probably the most valuable and impacting contribution this book will make. It's going to influence a lot of beginning mappers, like similar "How to Draw" books have made on impressionable young artists. And ultimately that's a good thing.

I recommend gifting this book to the young RPG'er in your life. They'll devour it.

Lightweight, inspirational

This thin book is a lightweight inspirational jewel. It is a bit sparse. It's not the densest encyclopedia of fantasy map making techniques you can get (are there any?) It has some great inspirational examples, step-by-steps on all the aspects of pulling together a compelling fantasy map (I wish there were more steps, more variations). I am glad I got this book for my art stash.

Good Book for Intermediate Artist

The book is good, and quite interesting. It covers quite a few different sections, from how to draw coastlines to rivers to mountains and foothills to forests to... you get the idea. There was a lot of step-by-step and some suggestions for how to place land features and how to spice up the maps with extra little quirky bits like troll holes in mountains or flags on top of castles... which was really great.

What was less than great was that the step-by-steps seemed to leave out a few steps. They all assumed that the reader was already a reasonably accomplished artist and skilled at drawing in general. Perhaps I expected too much from the book. I was able to copy some of the figures, and I got some reasonably good mountains and foothills, but it was difficult to understand how to get from one step to another or how to accomplish some of the techniques described.

It's not magic. This book will not instantly make you into a masterful illustrator. If you can hold a pencil and put in some effort, you'll get results. Maybe not grand hang-it-on-the-wall results, but fair.

If you're already a fair artist, this book is good. If you're a complete beginner, you will not get as much out of it but the ideas and concepts will still be useful. I would definitely say this book is targeted at the mildly-below-mid-level fantasy cartographer-to-be.
