Not a book about Universal's "City Walk"
By Zedder
Another beautifully illustrated book by Bernard Rudofsky (author of "Architecture without Architects", still in print), this time with ample commentary detailing the significance of pedestrian culture across the globe. One wonders whether Victor Gruen and Rudofsky personally knew each other and, if so, who was a greater advocate of street culture. I myself rarely walk anywhere, but, when I do, their appreciation of its pleasures informs every moment.

Liked the book, but he is such a Euro-snob.
By Brian Torri
Rudofsky wrote the book at the height of the first huge wave of emirgration to the suburbs, when cities were of nearly the least interest to people and the suburbs and their malls were where it was at. Now, years later, we have suburbs that are scrambling to rebuild themselves like cities and malls that have fallen prey to even bigger malls with more drawing power/gravity to pull in more shoppers. There is even a website called deadmalls.com to document the dead malls in America, the most famous of which is the long, long dead Dixie Mall in Harvey, Illinois, featured in the movie "The Blues Brothers".

I wonder what Rudofsky would think of Transit Oriented Development or The New Urbanism, just to name a few. He might well applaud them and say that he told us so. I wonder if he might even let someone drag out of him any grudging acceptance whatsoever that good urban design might exist in America, or if he might even expand his approval to speak up for affordable housing at all income levels, thereby expanding that label's appeal. Now, it just means Low Income Housing and Those People.

Given the times in which he wrote this book, the early to middle 1960s, I can somewhat forgive him for saying, "Those God-awful, Philistine Americans, they don't know the beauty of Europe". However, I think that the market has determined what people can and cannot take from their suburbs, and they are starting to demand better urban design based on the cost of doing the same old things in areas that are necessarily 40 miles away from the central city, if not further.

I may criticize this book somewhat, but let me tell you this: This book made me want to be a city planner, a dream I have made come true, when I read this book at the tender age of 14 or 15. I picked this book up and could not put it down. My library in my small town of Jackson, Michigan, had a copy and I either checked it out or read it numerous times. I think I even called Mrs. Rudofsky to offer my condolences after calling information for his number or looking it up on microfiche (oh, those pre-Internet/Mosaic/Netscape days!). I was so isolated in the dream that this book started that I didn't even know urban planning existed as a profession, much less that I could aspire to it.

In the end, take this book with a grain of salt, understand the author's biases and the times in which it was written. It may well have started an urban design revolution that many recent books in that field have continued.

Great lessons for American urban planners
By Blue in Washington
This is one of my all-time favorite books. Great writing and terrific illustrations. It is not only a wonderful reference book on architecture, history and urban life, it is the perfect travel book. Reading it before going overseas for the first time was the best preparation I had for appreciating other world architecture and history. Visiting people-friendly streets and public places inevitably leads the traveler to some of the most interesting spots in the world. It was Rudofsky's rhapsodic writing about Bologna, for example, that took me there and hooked me for life on that wonderful city.

Rudofsky's passion for pedestrian-centric cities is gradually seeping into the consciouness of U.S. urban planners. What a huge improvement in American urban living there could be if the public insisted that developers go back to the basics that Rudofsky preaches when building public buildings and private residences.

PS--I was devastated when my original copy of this book finally fell apart from years of use--but was thrilled to find that it was still in print and available through Amazon.

Chicago: America's Railroad Capital: The Illustrated History, 1836 to Today, by Brian Solomon, John Gruber, Chris Guss, Michael Blaszak

The first illustrated history of the people, machines, facilities, and operations that made Chicago the hub around which an entire continent's rail industry still revolves. In the mid-nineteenth century, Chicago's central location in the expanding nation helped establish it as the capital of the still-new North American railroad industry. As the United States expanded westward, new railroads and rail-related companies like Pullman established their headquarters in the Windy City, while eastern railroads found their natural western terminals there. Historically, railroads that tried to avoid Chicago failed. While the railroad industry has undergone dramatic changes over the course of its existence, little has changed regarding Chicago's status as the nation's railroad hub. In Chicago: America's Railroad Capital, longtime, prolific railroading author and photographer Brian Solomon - joined by a cast of respected rail journalists - examines this sprawling legacy of nearly 180 years, not only showing how the railroad has spurred the city's growth, but also highlighting the city's railroad workers throughout history, key players in the city and the industry, and Chicago's great interurban lines, fabulous passenger terminals, vast freight-processing facilities, and complex modern operations. Illustrated with historical and modern photography and specially commissioned maps, Chicago: America's Railroad Capital also helps readers understand how Chicago has operated - and continues to operate - as the center of a nationwide industry that is an essential cog in the country's commerce.

Why All Railroads Lead to Chicago
By Roy Blanchard
This book couldn’t have come at a better time. The nation’s railroads are facing some of the worst congestion ever, and the challenge of getting into and out of Chicago is a major contributing factor. What a change from what it was back in the day. The promotional material accompanying the title says, “ Historically, railroads that tried to avoid Chicago failed.” Yet now in the early 21st Century, the railroads that are there are looking for ways to exchange cars without going there. Chicago: America’s Railroad Capital tells how things came to this pass and what’s being done about it.

It’s a given in the railroad business that rail lines grew up to meet specific transportation needs, and they arranged their interactions to maximize their own returns on investment while minimizing nonproductive hours such as yard dwell time. The present volume is a no-nonsense chronological history of how today’s Chicago railroads network came about, lavishly illustrated and conveying a great sense of how and why the early rails managed to compete and collaborate all at once.

The book is arranged in four sections, each by a different author. Mike Blaszak, a prolific railroad writer in his own right, opens with an exhaustive and detailed history of how the railroads first came to Chicago, how they combined into our favorite fallen flag names, and ultimately evolved into the present-day properties. Included are two three-panel maps of freight routes and yards plus the passenger lines from Trains magazine, circa 2003.

Next Brian Solomon, a regular contributor to the Voyageur Press series of railroad books, does the same thing with the passenger routes, starting with a history and description of what Solomon calls the city’s “disparate stations.” How the Rock, Nickel Plate and New York Central worked LaSalle Street and the nearly next-door Grand Central Station, a Victorian edifice in the grand style, was shared by the B&O, Pere Marquette, Chicago Great Western and the Soo.

The IC had its own Central Station on the Lake Michigan waterfront, and between the two was Dearborn station, inhabited by the Santa Fe, Erie, Wabash, Monon and C&EI. Across the Chicago River, the Northwestern stood aloof, with a magnificent Beax Arts terminal, serving as the Chicago end for not only its own trains but also the long distance runs of the UP and SP. Finally, a few blocks south of that, stands Union station, built by the PRR and hosting trains of the Burlington, its NP and GN long distance partners, and the Milwaukee.

Now comes a delightful essay on railroad art, from the posters created to entice travelers to the railroads’ scenic lines back in the day, to how the city’s art and photography community recorded this great railroad legacy. We’re treated with quotes from Lucius Beebe, railroad publicity shots, samples of Jack Delano’s 4x5 Kodachromes for the Farm Security Administration, posters and commercial art, and even a vignette of an African-American family that worked in train service for three generations.

And finally, Part Four brings us to the present. Here we learn about the great variety of Amtrak long distance trains and commuter operations that still trace their heritage to predecessor roads like the IC, the Rock, the Milwaukee, the Northwestern, the South Shore, the Burlington and even the Wabash. Class I freight ops are well covered, here again acknowledging the fallen flag roads and how they morphed into the seven Class I roads operating in North America, all of which converge on Chicago. Rounding out the picture are the myriad short lines, regional rails, and switching roads, a few of which where there from the git-go (IHB, BRC, e.g.), but most of which are remnants of the earliest names to build into the Windy City.

What makes this book especially valuable to the present day student of the industry is the way the authors have shown why we have what we have today, why it works as it does, and and what’s being done to make Chicago, America’s Railroad Capital, work even better.

Needed an Editor
By Dick
This book is for train spotters, not a general audience. Even the historical chapter is nearly devoid of anything but modern photos of locomotives. There is no series of maps illustrating the sequence of railroad construction, only a couple of barely legible historical route maps. While the text exhibits a great deal of historical work, it is not united into a "story." One would have to copy out the information into a combined parallel chronology to understand what was going on. The chapter on terminals has NOT ONE picture of any facade of any of the many Chicago terminals -- only locomotives and cars on tracks in or near the train sheds. A badly-needed list of the abbreviations for railroad companies is missing, so if you can't memorize scores of abbreviations (e.g. C&NW, AT&SF, UP, ...) the text becomes very difficult to comprehend, Another missing part is a map of Chicago, only partly mitigated by the fold-out rail maps with correspondences to some of the many geographic references in the text. In short, this book badly needed an Editor -- not to correct the English, which is flawless, but to shape it into a book that lives up to the promise of its title.

Much better than expected.
By Hal Owen
This book is a splendid addition to a Chicago bound-train lover's library. The title says it all - good copy, great pictures and detailed maps should keep you in your favorite reading chair for many pleasurable hours. I'm surprised there wasn't more favorable buzz preceding C-ARC's release.

Buy the 1st Edition! The 2nd Edition is ruined with basic errors.
By Jon Smith
In terms of content this book was outstanding. It provided great examples for a beginner learning options for the first time. I have taken a few option courses before and his strategies, techniques and terminologies were helpful. They were a little on the beginner side but as a market risk professional I will not that against him as he described the book as the "first book that new professional traders are given to learn the trading strategies and risk management techniques required for success in option markets." Given that it was outstanding.

Now the reasons for the 1 rating: Simply put, the book is filled with basic 101 mistakes:
1) Simple mathematical errors such as multiplication versus addition occur throughout the book's example
2) It appears he overwrote examples (from the previous book?) with new numbers but he only partially updated the example at times. For instance: he will have 3 positions with a strike price of: 70, 75 & 80 and out of now where he ends up using 70, 75 & 65 for his three strikes.
3) He has several typos in which he states one thing twice and then the direct opposite a second later (usually the example is wrong).
4) The quantity of errors is surreal as makes you question the integrity of the book as a whole.
5) I would not say it is "advanced strategies and techniques" but beginner to intermediate strategies and techniques.

While I found this book to be a good resource (since I placed the emphasis on the ideas and terms, not the examples), I would not recommend it as your first book (which he described it as). Based on the reviews of the 1st Edition, I would say buy that book as it may be the best book for options. If he spent the time and provided good examples, I would give this book 5 stars and say it was a must have for ever collection. But the errors occur too often and they break down at a basic level. For a basic book that is heavily flawed, I saw it should only be rated a 1. If I did not have prior experience in options (academic courses and professional experience), I would be confused. Fortunately, most of the mistakes that he makes are quite obvious and you should be able to correct them on your own even if you are learning it for your first time. Overall, I say buy the 1st edition and avoid this book like a plague. Overall, if he would have read the book over, he should have been able to easily catch his mistakes. It's a shame he did not take the time to review the book to make sure it was written correctly. I've very disappointed in Sheldon Natenberg as his first edition was consider the bible of options (still is). 2nd Edition was a complete failure.

A Must For Anyone Considering Trading Options
By apage
This book is considered the "bible" on options implied volatility. Natenburg was a pioneer into this study decades ago, and his work is still relevant today. Anyone who is thinking about trading options should add this book to their library. This book covers everything from the Greeks, the Black-Scholes model, binomial options, to hedging with options, and much more . . . I recommend reading this book with pencil and graph paper in hand to work through some of the concepts to make sure you fully grasp what you are reading; the writing style is clear (if somewhat dry) and the author has no problem communicating his knowledge and fully teaching the reader the concepts, but this book builds on itself quickly and if you are unsure of some concept early on, and don't correct it, you will probably be lost in later sections. Although this book covers the fundamentals of options and normal distributions/standard deviations; it would greatly help knowing the fundamentals of the aforementioned concepts before reading this book to fully grasp the information presented.

The historic role that the model has played is outlined with attention paid to Alberti, John Soane, the Bauhaus and education reforms. A cultural history is offered by examining models in the guise of toys, food, cinema, product design, souvenirs, narrative and art. The Indian Ocean (Seas in History), by Michael Pearson

In this stimulating and authoritative overview, Michael Pearson reverses the traditional angle of maritime history and looks from the sea to its shores - its impact on the land through trade, naval power, travel and scientific exploration. This vast ocean, both connecting and separating nations, has shaped many countries' cultures and ideologies through the movement of goods, people, ideas and religions across the sea.

The Indian Ocean moves from a discussion of physical elements, its shape, winds, currents and boundaries, to a history from pre-Islamic times to the modern period of European dominance. Going far beyond pure maritime history, this compelling survey is an invaluable addition to political, cultural and economic world history.

Review

'This is a fine achievement that by a very wide margin displaces such general accounts of the Indian Ocean as are available. It is commedably comprehensive, covering an immensely long span of time, from the ancient world to the present, with an enviable aura of authority throughout.' - Peter Marshall, King's College London

'In this stimulating and comprehensive volume, Michael Pearson traces out the history of the Indian Ocean from ancient times to the present, and shows how the ocean has knitted together its diverse communities. Whether in his evocations of ship board life, or descriptions of pilgrims and traders, Pearson makes of the Indian Ocean, for the first time in historical scholarship, a vital and lively arena of study.' - Thomas Metcalf, University of California, Berkeley

'This is a book that maritime archaeologist should find useful.' - Nautical Archaeology

'For the reader new to the subject they will provide stimulating and informative introductions ... [and] will easily win a place on the few reading lists around the world that feature Indian Ocean studies.' - The Round Table

'[Pearson's] impressive tour de force through human history ... covers a remarkably wide range of topics, he also writes very well ... The book will certainly become the standard account for this history of the Indian Ocean for some time.' - Social Anthropology Journal

An enaging survey
By Amrit
The historical study of a sea or ocean is perhaps one of the most challenging kinds of history to write, involving as it does having to negotiate a vast range of material and the task of pulling out of that material common themes and issues. Pioneered by Fernand Braudel's work on the Mediterranean, the genre has produced works on other seas including the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean has seen a particularly steady stream of work beginning notably with KN Chaudhuri's "Trade and Civilisation in the Indian Ocean". Pearson's book represents an important contribution to the genre.

The Indian Ocean he notes has "a long history of contact and distant voyages done by people from its coasts" unlike the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans which became joined as a common space only after the Fifteenth Century. Study of the subject therefore benefits from a large body of evidence and materials produced over a long period of time which the historian may access.

The first chapter deals with the "deep structure" of the Ocean, based on its geography, topography and climate, including in particular the workings of the monsoon winds that carried ships and trade across the Ocean from Antiquity. The second chapter explores the distribution of peoples around the sea, and in particular looks at why port cities emerged as such to assume an important role in the history of the Ocean and its littoral states. It also looks at the lives of traders and fisherman who made their living off the sea differentiating them from the peasants who tilled the land and comprised most of the population. Access to the sea is generally thought to economically advantage people living in its ports benefiting as they do from the role of ports as magnets for produce from the inland and also from across the seas. Pearson however does not dwell in detail on this aspect of the economy of the Ocean in creating a common space.

The third chapter begins the historical narrative with the Sumerians and Vedic Indians and a review of their mythological interpretations of the Sea and well as the early sea faring and maritime commerce of the Mesopotamians and Harappans. This is followed by the arrival of Greek and Roman ships in the Arabian Sea as well as Chinese visitors during Gupta and post-Gupta times. The key process during the Late Antiquity however was the spread of Indian commerce, religious traditions and culture to the Malay World with the establishment of significant "Indianised" states in mainland and maritime South East Asia such as Funan and Sri Vijaya, The joining of the Ocean in Antiquity also brought with it influences from outside, notably Greek and Roman influence seeing the establishment of Christianity in South India and Ethiopia.

Following the establishment of Islam as the dominant political and religious force in the Middle East, Islam follows into the Ocean with the establishment of Muslim merchant communities across the entire Ocean from Arabia and East Africa to India and South East Asia to become eventually the dominant religious and cultural force across the Indian Ocean world. Indian Muslims rather than Arabs or Persians play a key role in introducing Islam into the Malay world. Powerful Muslim states are established in Iran, India and eventually South East Asia. The coming of Islam to the Ocean also sees major technical innovation in navigation, notably the introduction of the lateen sail - still seen today around the Ocean. The arrival of Zheng He's treasure fleet in the Ocean in the fifteenth century brings a new element into play. Chinese navigational advances brought to the Ocean include the compass (previously introduced). The Chinese presence however is short lived until the return of China to the Ocean in the Twenty First Century.

Europeans arrive in the Ocean in the Sixteenth Century after an absence of about fifteen centuries (since Roman times). The Portuguese (unlike their Roman predecessors) are a disruptive element who attempt forcibly to seize the commerce of the Ocean from Muslim merchants - with mixed results. Basic patterns in Oceanic trade and movement of people and goods do not change despite these events. The Portuguese are joined by the Dutch who succeed in establishing a territorial empire in Indonesia.

However, it is the arrival of the British that proves to be the harbinger of more significant change. The British, through their control of India, succeed in dominating the Ocean militarily, politically and economically and for the first time in the history of the Ocean succeed in marginalising the peoples who inhabit the Ocean. Indigenous shipping gives way to modern British (and European) shipping. Insurance, finance and the economy generally are also dominated by Europeans even if Indian bankers still manage to hold onto a reasonable share of the pie. British settlers also arrive in Australia and South Africa, introducing a new people into the Indian Ocean world. The end of colonialism however sees a rapid return to greater control of the Ocean by its peoples with European commercial, political and military power giving way to local States as well as new competitors from outside the Ocean such as China, Japan and the US (not to mention the former USSR).

Pearson's sweeping survey deals with India (or South Asia) more than any other region, which he sees as the "fulcrum" of the Ocean, containing about 70% of the population that lives in littoral states and an economy that dwarfs all others combined. He avoids concentrating on material life (unlike say Braudel) and looks to the "unity" of the Ocean through the prism of "global historians" of "migration, commerce and conquest" as well as shared cultural and religious traditions. This represents a fresh new approach into the study of seas.

The Indian Ocean is thought by some to be the emerging focal point of world history where old and new powers will compete for resources, allies and influence. Three of those powers indeed are Indian Ocean states themselves, namely India, Indonesia and Iran. Other powers with key interests in the Ocean include China, Japan, Russia and the US. Robert Kaplan's Monsoon sets out his analysis of how these dynamics may work. Andre Frank argues that the Indian Ocean always has been the focal point of world history and that its return to prominence after a period of European and North American dominance represents but a reassertion of "deep structure" in world history. If Kaplan and Frank are right, Pearson's work provides an engaging survey of the historical context for important processes now unfolding before us.

Routledge, hear me!
By Carol
This is a splendid book that I would love to use as the core text in a new course on the Indian Ocean. To paraphrase Alfred Doolittle, "I'm willing to use it, I'm wanting to use it, I'm waiting to use it." But I will not ask my students to pay $100 for it: in the absence of expensive color plates or other kinds of graphics, I have a hard time seeing why a 300-plus page book costs so much. I have been hoping for a paperback issue but see no indications that such might be forthcoming.

A well-written account covering many centuries.
By lyndonbrecht
A fine book in a fine series ("Seas in History"). It is grounded in seeing the ocean not as an obstacle but an enabler, a means of connection. Americans like me are oriented to the Atlantic and Pacific, so the Indian Ocean is distant in more ways than one. With India in the north, Africa on the west, Southeast Asia and Australia on the southeast borders of the Ocean, this is a lively and important region. And we can't forget that the Red Sea and Persian Gulf open into it, so the Middle East abuts it as well.

The book starts with the deep geophysical features: origin, winds, currents, climates, geography. This overview is the theater for his description of the history that follows, which is quite good. Pearson covers the traditional trade routes, fishing and the impact on and activity by littoral cultures. Islam spread through Muslim traders, and the overall activity predating European intrusion was substantial and long-standing. The author is from Australia, which of course borders the Indian Ocean and may account for the fact the book is not as Eurocentric as books like this often are.

The book is good on the age of European empires, in the Indian Ocean of course primarily the British. The earlier Portuguese empire is described as rather small in its impact, denting but not destroying the preexisting trade system. That point is important because it indicates how very large and forceful the existing system was. The portion on the British is good, but overall maybe too much of the book. There are chapters on Muslims on the Ocean, Europeans in the Indian Ocean World, the early modern world and a fine chapter "History on the Ocean."

good older songbook
By D. Trefz
I was particularly looking for a specific song and had traced it to "Advent Youth Sing" So it was there and was reminded once again what a great little songbook it is. A little older now, not quite as contemporary as we thought of it when it first came out, I'd say it rather classic now.
