About the Author
Leon Burnett is Reader in Literature at the University of Essex, where he is currently director of the Centre for Myth Studies. His research interests are mainly in comparative and Russian literature. A former member of the executive committee of the British Comparative Literature Association, he was the main editor of its journal, New Comparison, from 1992 to 2000. He is at present working on a study of literary and artistic representations of the sphinx in Russia and the West.
Emily Lygo is Lecturer in Russian at the University of Exeter. Her research interests are mainly in twentieth-century Russian poetry, translation in the USSR and Anglo-Soviet cultural relations. Her publications include Leningrad Poetry 1953-1975: The Thaw Generation (2010) and articles on Russian poetry and cultural history.

About the flowers

The Medieval Flower Book is a lovely hardcover book about various flowers with a medieval illustration or two for each one. The emphasis is on the flowers themselves, where and why they were grown, and how they were used, with full the medieval drawings as illustrations. Each flower gets a one or two page treatment with minimal text. It's a good gift book.

I'd like to compare this with Flowers in Medieval Manuscripts, by the same author, which is a paperback that shows how the flowers were used in manuscripts as decoration, or as instruction, and how they were drawn. I actually find this book to be the more interesting of the two, especially if you are into caligraphy or illustration.

Just what I was looking for...

This is the perfect reference for a novel I'm writing. I like the fact that the author "proves" the flowers were part of medieval gardens by pulling references from art and literature, and includes when the flowers arrived on the scene (the Middle Ages were long). But what I found amazing is the focus on the symbolism the flowers held for the culture.

When life punches you in the stomach....acceptance or fighting to seek answers?

This is one of the best variations on P&P that I have ever read. I found that it had been released by a note on a blog this morning and, as I have read and loved this author's other books, immediately read the Sample and then ordered it. I finished it just now. I rate many books and/or movies by the number of tissues I use and this one was up there with 7 tissues...not just a tear or two but out-and-out sobbing at times.

I have to mention that there is an issue in this book which is alive and well despite some improvements, some progress in amelioration over the centuries. That is the conflict between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. It has been very much in evidence in my lifetime in news from Ireland and Britain, and here in the states although not in violent marches and splits in families that seem to occur in Ireland, especially. Pardon me if I am wrong but that is what has been portrayed in the news media and in this book it plays a big role.

This story starts with a flashback as a young man throws himself on an altar, sobbing, and bemoans "her death". It then takes us to Longbourn, to that confrontation between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth, in which Lady C. is demanding that Elizabeth not ever become engaged to her nephew. Here the story diverges in A HUGE WAY, and this point, this news, this major bit of family history and the research into and resolution of the issue, take up most of the REST of the story.

This tale, within the first few pages grabbed my heart with both hands and didn't let go for a long time. I didn't want to put it down. And I wanted to share it with all my JAFF friends. There are dark, gloomy valleys of despair descended into and high mountains of joy climbed in this story. Most of the characters from canon residing at Longbourn are there but Darcy's family has added characters, two uncles, who play major roles for Elizabeth and Darcy. Lady Catherine and her deceased husband also play important roles. Colonel Fitzwilliam has a lesser role but continues to see Elizabeth's worth, even to be drawn to her charms. Georgiana is present for many scenes and relates to Elizabeth as in canon. Mr. Bennet's relationship with "his favorite daughter" gives us food for thought: did he act in the best interest...for Elizabeth...for himself?

I don't want to state my one objection as it would be a SPOILER but the practice of such is no longer allowed in England. The romance, the chemistry, the words of love, the longing - even when not allowed bring sighs and angst. And in the end, in the epilogue, the author brings FAITH into Elizabeth's look back on the past ten years and the events, the fact that life is not always fair. I love the way the author brought life's realities into this story. Our Dear Couple's life was not always perfect and Elizabeth was not always happy and smiling and teasing. But this made the story all the more of a delightful love story.

Dear Readers, this one is a MUST...do not miss reading this tale.

There are so many amazing stories and authors in the Jane Austen fan fiction world but after reading countless online and owning well over 350, it is not difficult to confuse one story from another. However, author Jan Hahn’s latest offering, “A Peculiar Connection--A Pride & Prejudice Alternate Path” is beyond daring. Heartrending. And written so painfully well—one could never confuse it with another.

“A Peculiar Connection” begins when Lady Catherine de Bourgh confronts Elizabeth Bennett in the prettyish kind of little wilderness at Longbourn and declares any union between her nephew Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth would be “a sin against Heaven itself!” and offers a mysterious document as proof. But as Elizabeth tries to accept the truth, Darcy cannot--and is on a mission throughout the novel to unearth long, buried Pemberley secrets. “Elizabeth, ours is a peculiar connection, but a connection I will endure. You must not doubt me, for I possess the strongest of wills. When I set my mind to a task, it is accomplished.” And though he puts on a brave face, the heart wants what the heart wants and Hahn’s achingly beautiful prose had my own heart in my throat for countless pages. I willingly suspended my belief as Hahn unfolded her shockingly, unbelievable tale and I confess to have been brought to tears several times as Darcy and Elizabeth bear this poignant torment and disavow their longing. “I looked away, unwilling to meet his eyes. ‘Elizabeth, I…’ ‘Sir, I pray you say nothing more.’ He turned his eyes to the window, and in doing so, he sighed deeply. ‘Then let us say farewell, and God bless you, Elizabeth.’ He raised my hands to his lips, and I caught my breath at the tenderness of his kiss.” (Gahhhh, like I said…I was gutted.)

Despite the torment, and as in Hahn’s other novels, written in the first person through the eyes of Elizabeth Bennett, we are privy to her sharp wit and amusing inner commentary to soften our sweet torture. “Once I did find myself without a partner, I witnessed Mr. Darcy ask Marianne to dance a second time. I decided I had made a mistake earlier, thinking she and might be friends. Of a sudden, I decided she smiled too much.” But have faith, blessedly, and in true Austen style, we are rewarded with a most satisfactory resolution.

Fans of Jan Hahn may recognize this as “Sins of the Father” that was first posted online in 2011. I remember reading this online as a work-in-progress at Mrs. Darcy’s Story Site in 2011 and waiting anxiously each week for her to post the next installment. Sundays soon became known in my household as "Jan H Night". Note, this latest has been professionally edited and tightened whilst the overall story remains the same…and I am delighted to own the kindle version (and await delivery of my paperback to be able to read in the bath and not risk electrocution.) Hahn’s writing is always well written and her characters never disappoint. Regardless of how far she may stray from canon, her Darcy and Elizabeth always honor Austen's originals (at least to me). I will wait in joyful hope for her next offering but until then, “A Peculiar Connection” is not to be missed. You can thank me later.

Wow, what a great variation

WOW what a story! I have read many other variations that were very good but, this variation out shine them. When Elizabeth learned devasating news that she is the illegitimate daughter of George Darcy her world is turned upside down. She run the gambit of emotions, hatred for the Bennetts, self doubt, anger and despaired. Together with Fitszwilliam she learned the tragic love story of her natural parents and to forgive those who raise her. Ms Hahn writes with such emotions that you feel for the characters. I don't get emotional when reading but the letter that Elinor wrote to Elizabeth about her mother got me all choked up. I highly recommend this novel and others Jan Hahn's novels.

Baker uses an imaginative array of acrylic colors for his hens-greens, purples, and pinks to contrast with the warm, yellow straw background. There are lots of things to count, such as sticks, eggs, chicks, and hens. A fine choice for toddler story hours.

Ages 3-6. Kids will adore this big fat hen, and even though the book doesn't really work as the counting book it's supposed to be, the artwork is enough to carry it. The text is the old rhyme, "One, two, buckle my shoe," and the double-page spreads show the hen and her chicks (first appearing as eggs) enacting the words. On the pages on which the numbers appear, for instance, "5, 6," there are six eggs and five caterpillars, a dual concept that may be difficult for beginning counters to comprehend. The next page, "Pick up sticks," is even more chock-full, with chicks and lots of sticks everywhere. Children who want to skip the counting altogether can just enjoy the singsong text and the pictures executed in acrylic paints. The big fat hen is very large and quite beautiful, with iridescent green feathers accented with purple and red; her friends are just as lovely, all colors, some with delicate patterns in their feathers. With oversize characters and objects that can be seen at the very back of the room, this is a ready read-aloud for the story-hour set. Ilene Cooper

I bought this book sight unseen and absolutely love it. I'm a kinder teacher always on the prowl for books with folk stories and nursery rhymes. Big Fat hen is... 1,2 Buckle My Shoe. The illustrations are fabulous and the kids, love the rhyming. It's a popular pick in my classroom!

Our four month old grandson is fascinated with this book!

Our grandson loves this book and learned to turn the pages at four months. The coloring and graphics appeal to him. Another grandmother gave it to us and she was right on target. It is the only book we've found that holds his interest and that he doesn't chew instead of read.

If you have a small business, or even if you are an individual in need of some funds and you cannot use traditional credit — small business loans from banks, credit cards, etc. — you might turn to a new alternative in P2P.

The basics of P2P are this: this type of lending cuts the banks directly out of the equation and let the pool of investors decide whether or not to lend you money, typically perpetrated through companies that do all of the necessary due diligence to verify and validate the risk of potential borrowers.

Prosper.com is the oldest of the bunch, but there are many (which we will list later in the book). The nuts and bolts of P2P lending for a potential borrower look like this:

1.You agree to a preliminary credit check and will have to disclose your debt-to-income ratio so that he can be verified by the staff of whatever facility is vetting the loan.

2.based on the information obtained, both through you and from the investigation performed by the company, you will be assigned a credit risk score.

3.using a score, you will be assigned a letter grade (anywhere from AA through E) and an appropriate APR that correlates to the credit risk you pose to the actual lenders — who are typically a pool of private investors.

4.you will be offered a variety of different loan amounts and APR levels that very depending on the length of time you will be taking to pay off the loan as well as the actual amount of the loan itself. The less risk involved for the investors, the lower the APR will typically be. These can range from about 6 1/2% all the way up to more than 20% in some cases. It's all based on risk.

The way that lenders protect their investment in these kinds of loans is that they are only investing in tiny fragments and fractions of multiple loans as opposed to putting all their money into one loan. In that way they mitigate the risk if some loans go into default.
In the early days of P2P lending some of the original companies can place a high enough bar (standard) on who could borrow, nor did they properly inform investors (money lenders) about the level of associated risk. The business model, at least in its inception, basically exploded.

These days, however, the standard for such loans have gotten much more strict and refined, as well as the ways in which research is conducted on various applicants. Companies like prosper.com claim that their average return earned by investors/lenders is in the neighborhood of 10%. Makes for an interesting business model.
At this point in the game, even the basic concept of P2P lending is going through a dramatic change. And other companies that are getting publicity are making it difficult for the general public to understand what the differences are between P2P and crowdfunding actually are.

With crowdfunding (also referred to as collaborative funding, or donation-based funding), a borrower only gets the money if enough people agree to put up little bits and pieces (think kickstarter.com). In a crowd funding scenario a borrower will only receive their money if enough people agree to put up sufficient funds. If 100% of the loan is not achieved, you did nothing. Kickstarter.com is probably the most prominent among the crowd funding sites.

Good concepts in theory but in actual execution one might find it very difficult to get a loan or grant using the resources highlighted in this book. On a side note, one of the resources highlighted encouraged me in an unintended way to do charity lending - something I really want to do to help folks in poorer countries get loans to establish business. 3 stars
